* * *

Jake's head whipped over to see Casey slap a hand over mouth and her eyes widen in complete horror.

"Sure," he said slowly as he reached behind him to find his t-shirt from earlier. He pulled it over his head, trying to keep the confusion from his face. Seriously though, what the hell?

From behind the hand still at her mouth, she let out a muffled giggle, one that held a more than a tinge of hysteria. Maybe she was drunk. Her eyes looked tired, and a little red. Had she been crying? Lord, the one thing that might send him into a state of abject terror was if he had to see this woman cry.

"I'm so sorry," she stammered. "I can't believe I just said that. It's just, you're sitting there all shirtless, and I think I know what you're about to say, and my day was so, so, so crappy that clearly I can't handle you saying what you're about to say while sitting next to me looking like that."

Okay, this was a Casey he was not prepared for. He couldn't help the small grin that crept across his face, because he couldn't deny that he liked seeing her so flustered. If he was completely honest with himself, he just plain liked Casey. Almost every interaction they'd had, she managed to surprise him in some way. Especially last Sunday.

Seeing her get so mouthy and feisty about him seeing that stupid wall had weakened him. Still, he would have been perfectly capable of staying in control, even after stepping up onto that ladder behind her. Putting his hand around her waist had been stupid, amazing but stupid. And it wasn't even the thing that made him give in.

It was the look in her eyes when she looked back at him. It had been so heavy with need that he felt like he'd been unleashed. No other word for it. Normally, he would be disgusted in himself for not having better control of his own body. But the way she had felt pressed up against him, he couldn't regret what had happened.

And the way he'd felt in that moment, it was like he was being split down the middle, the devil on one side whispering to keep taking and touching and tasting and the other little devil screaming at him that she would just be one more thing ripped from him.

Yeah, long ago he recognized that he had a devil on each shoulder, rather than one angel to balance things out. Those white robed suckers were reserved for the glass half full type of people. Though, he imagine that if he did have one, it would agree...Casey was probably better off not getting involved with him like that. All week he had struggled with finding the right time and the right words to say to her, because after a few days of very conspicuous avoidance on her part, he knew it would be up to him to initiate this talk. He had to admit he was surprised she didn't try the usual chick stuff afterward.
